If you're in Chapel Hill, try Breadman's. It may not fit your idea of "old-fashioned," but then I don't think that IHOP or Denny's are old-fashioned either. Breadman's has the best darn pancakes I've ever tasted, and their "Big Breadman Breakfast" is enough to fill even me. Tasty food all around.

If you're looking for something more in the Denny's arena, try Shoney's. I wouldn't recommend it.

Don't forget Dip's, on Rosemary ST. A fixture here for years and years, and has been written up numerous times, most recently in, I believe, Southern Living magazine. I read recently that as a result of that article, people are traveling from all over to come and savor this down-home Southern cooking. Very UNfancy place, but you must try it at least once - good and greasy and VERY tasty!! Not just for breakfast - they serve lunch and dinner too.

If you're in Durham, try LeCoco's. Great omeletes, fritattas (sp), waffles, etc. There's one on 55 south of 40 and one on the corner of Roxboro Rd and Latta, about 5 miles N of 85.

I agree with Breadmans (which serves breakfast anytime they
are open) and Dip's (which is best known for dinner and lunch)

and would add Ye Olde Waffle Shop, which is near the post office in downtown Chapel Hill. I think there is at least one

IHOP (in Raleigh) and at least used to be a Denny's in the Triangle area. Many other restaurants also serve breakfast. It is not unusual to find great breakfast at a restaurant that

is best known for dinner, like Dip's. I have been surprised at some of the great breakfasts I have had at Chinese or other

speciality restaurants. Does anyone know if any of the local publications (Indy, Spec, etc.) have tried to do a breakfast review, as opposed to a popularity contest like the Spec does?

If you should find yourself in Raleigh, try Finch's on Peace St. near Capital Blvd.

there's also an Elmo's in Durham now (9th street). I haven't eaten breakfast there yet but the menu looks the same as the original Elmo's.

also if you're looking for something that's actually LIKE a Denny's, then try Honey's in Durham (I-85 Guess Rd exit). I like it better than Shoney's because Shoney's is always overrun by crowds because of the breakfast bar.

If you're near Cary, go to Christie's on East Chatham (near the intersection with Maynard, across from The Circus Restaurant). They have fantastic breakfasts - pancakes (buttermilk, blueberry, granola, etc), waffles, french toast, omelettes, etc. The home fries are great. I'm pretty sure they serve breakfast all day long.

If you're just looking for an IHOP, there is one on Hillsborough St. in Raleigh... towards downtown from NCSU.

Christie's gets my vote though when I am in the mood to go out for breakfast.

I appologize if these have already been mentioned. I missed the beginning of this thread. My favorites for breakfast food are either Breadman's or Dip's. Both are on Rosemary St in Chapel Hill. Breadman's serves from the breakfast menu all day. Dip's only serves breakfast before 11am.
