Try The Ivy Room, once the most famous (and only) restaurant within walking distance of Duke's East Campus. They got evicted from their home of 40 years when the building's owner could charge more rent to a chain pizza place. So they cut back on their large restautant menu and delicatesson and moved to the corner of 55 and ?Carpenter/Fletcher Road (according to my map), the first stoplight north of the I-40 intersections on 55. The building recently contained a pool hall, an auto parts place, and the Ivy Room. They still serve Chicken in the Rough, served with honey and great biscuits, and the best (and biggest serving of) onion rings in the area. I think they added dinner hours but for a while they were only serving breakfast and lunch.

Hey, all - I've been lurking here just waiting for a chance to share the best- kept food secret in Durham, as well as re-start the omnipresent BBQ debate....try the Pan-Pan Diner!!!!

They have a _huge_ menu, including REAL deli sandwiches (chopped liver, tongue, pastrami, etc.) as well as excellent fried chicken. Fried chicken & waffles is a menu item. It is good. Go at lunch any day & get the all you can eat buffet for $5.99. They have the chicken, as well as beef ribs, pork ribs, country fried steak, and the BEST BBQ around, IMHO. They smoke the pig on site, rip it off the bones, & mix it with spicy sauce. It's not traditional chopped NC BBQ, it's more like a pig pickin'. Buffet also features real mashed potatoes, various greens & beans (nice & fatty), & much, much more. It's a steal. Dinners & a la carte are kind of pricy. However, the dinner buffet (8.99) usually has fried oysters...) If you go late at night (they're open 24 hours)
try a Patty Melt. Yum yum. Yum!
