There is a new restaurant in the shopping center behind South Square in Durham, between Egghead and Pier One Imports. It is called China Garden or China Gate or something like that. Has an excellent lunch buffet and they add seafood on weekends (crab legs, mussels on the half shell, etc. Not a thousand choices, but they make things in small quantities so the food remains fresh. On the regular menu is 'Country Soup' done about six different ways. A huge bowl with homemade noodles, broth, vegetables, meat, (depending on what variant you order). Neochina is still our favorite, but this is a nice second choice and the country soup dishes make it different. Open seven days per week. --mark

Excellent new Chinese Restaurant in the South Square Area
The Restaurant is called China Garden. We ate there for the thrid time tonight. Good service and great food. They have about 7 varieties of their country noodle dishes...huge soup bowls with noodles, broth, meat, veggies, whatever. Too large a portion for most people. You can even get this dish to go..in two containers. We had the noodles with pork and chinese greens tonight. Had pork and szechuan cabbage last time. There are some non-pork variants available. The dishes cost about $6.95 China Garden has 20 percent of dinners and $1 off lunches as an opening special in December.
