>Japanese restaurants and those with eclectic cuisine.

Long Island is a large area. You're better off posting this to a dining or restaurant newsgroup; or even one of the li newsgroups. It's a rarity that you'll so restaurants recommended in this newsgroup (rec.food.cooking). We discuss cooking here.

For Italian food, try Cafe Angelica on Jericho Turnpike in Garden City. Japanese...there's Sapporo on Hillside Avenue in New Hyde Park or Kyoto in Floral Park on Jericho Turnpike.

Re: Eliot Deutsch's inquiry about restaurants in this area --

We stayed at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor a couple of weeks ago, and had a wonderful dinner at a relatively new tapas restaurant practically next door called HELENA'S: Cocina de Espana. It's at 29 Main Street, Sag Harbor, 516-725-0101.

Helena's husband Richard gives a warm greeting, and is happy to offer his recommendations if you're having trouble choosing. We liked everything we had, but offer one stern warning: under NO circumstances should you miss the bread pudding for dessert!!!

Best wishes,

Jackie:

3 suggestions (sorry, only one is Japanese):

1.) In Port Jefferson, there's a restaurant called Hana. I've never been disappointed with their sushi, sashimi, etc.

2.) For FANTASTIC French try Mirabelle in St. James.

3.) For New American try the West End Cafe in Garden City.

You won't be disappointed by any of them (unless, of course, you were looking for inexpensive fare).

Regarding your mention of Hana in Port Jefferson ... I just wanted to add that it IS a great Japanese restaurant -- although I haven't been there personally in about 5 years. As a matter of fact, it's the only Japanese restaurant where I was able to try raw shrimp sushi (as opposed to the cooked kind that you normally see).
