Just outside Syracuse, New York, where I grew up, there is a hot dog joint named Heids, across from Onondaga Lake, just down the road from the Salt Museum. (What I now find odd is that when I was growing up I *didn't* find it odd that Syracuse had a Salt Museum, or a Salt Springs Ave., or a Salina Street.)
Anyway, Heids offers both hot dogs and coneys. Coneys are the same size and shape as hot dogs, but white and somewhat peppery. (They remind me somewhat of Weisswurst that I had when I was traveling through Germany.)
Both types are cooked on a grill that has not been cleaned (at least as far as my father and I can tell) since about 1947. This adds to the general flavor of the place; the smoke from the grill adds to the atmosphere. There are only a few things you can order at Heids: they are a hot dog, a coney, two hot dogs, two coneys, or a "one and one" (which is one hot dog and one coney).
Anyway. does anyone know if coneys are only available in Syracuse, or perhaps only in the general Central New York region? Do any other ex-pat Syracusans miss Heids and coneys, and/or know of a source for them in the greater Boston area? And does anyone else find it odd that there's a Salt Museum in Syracuse?
