I'm not positive of the name, but I think that the place we went to was called La Tertulia. It was 4-5 blocks southwest of the central plaza. They had excellent Mexican food. The meals were very large, the soup was great, the soapapillas were to die for, and the atmosphere was wonderful. Note: we eat early, and at 5:00 there was no line at all. I hear that the place gets real crowded after 7:00 and reservations are suggested. They had a parking lot if you are staying too far to walk. There are plenty of other, more expensive restaurants in Santa Fe, but I don't think that you are paying for the food, you are paying for the owners fancy house.

REQUEST: Super restaurants in Santa Fe and vicinity

It's just a beautiful restaurant and the drive is gorgeous too. I can't recommend it highly enough. They offer a vegetarian Enchilada but other than that, it's not mexican food. For lunch another beautifully senic restaurant and drive is Rancho de Chimyo which has good mexican food. Any of the locals or hotels can provide you with easy directions. in town I would recommend two places for lunch. Josey's and The Shed. You should arrive when they open because some times they're a line during the summer... but they're both great for mexican food. Also Molly's Mexican Kitchen is good too. For breakfast, La Fonda is beautiful and has good food... a good way to while away a morning. For dinner you might think about Oh Shoot! the name just left me. its in the rail road yards... I think it used to be a railway station. The name of the restaurant is a woman's name... for some reason I think it starts with a G... El Farole's on Canyon Road is good too... you can tour up and down the art galleries out there and then have an enchilada there... I might also add that even chain restaurants have a Santa Fe flavor. Pizza Hut offers Green Chile on their pizzas. I really didn't include any of the new wave/California type mexican restaurants where they serve blackberry chocolate sauce over a green chile stuffed with papaya. What I gave you is good HONEST :) traditional new-mex mexican cooking. And, when you're leaving, be sure to stop at the tamale factory and pick up a couple of dozen tamales. It's out off of cerillos road... or it used to be, anyway. Send me a post card, I miss my home town. Well I've rambled on long enough trying to remember the name of the restaurant at the railway station... I give up. skip [email removed] From Wed Apr 7 08:48:57 EDT 1993 Article: 4861 of rec.food.restaurants

I would also recommend the Rio Grande Restaurant in Espanola. It is not fancy, but has some of the best traditional New Mexican food I've ever had. If possible, call ahead and make sure that Benny is cooking. I particularly recommend the New Mexican green chile. >For lunch another beautifully senic restaurant and drive is Rancho de Chimyo >which has good mexican food. I can second this recommendation. The setting is great and the food is quite good.
