There have been quite a few posts lately about the lack of good restaurants in New Jersey. Well, I found a great one on my first night in New Jersey thanks to a recommendation from the hotel's front desk clerk.

Trattoria Nicola, 900 Easton Ave, Somerset, N.J. 908-745-4846

I was warned that this is a "dry" restaurant so I stopped along the way and bought a split of 1991 Ridge Santa Cruz Cabernet which they willingly served (no corkage fee). If you forget to purchase before arriving, they will call the liquor store for a delivery.

The food, presentation, and service are all excellent. The plate of carpaccio was one of the nicest presentations that I've seen. Their porcini ravioli was served with a cream port sauce that was so good that I doubt that they really needed to wash the plate after I had used my bread to sop up every last drop.

Entrees range from approximately $10 - $20.

Another great restaurant for moderate priced food is the Pub. Its on Rt 130 by the Airport Circle in South Jersey. I think its in Camden County. The Pub is for those people who like a lot of food. They have a big hearth on which they cook dishes involving fish, chicken, steaks, and ribs. They also have a huge salad bar. The dining area is also huge (almost cavernous) so this isn't an intimate kind of place by any means. They also have a large waiting area with a bar which comes in handy because they can get very busy and reservations are not accepted as far as I know.

Somehow "Food Bites" seems an appropriate name for New Jersey restaurants - at least South Jersey restaurants - the only exceptions being White House Subs in Atlantic City, Weber's Drive-In in Cherry Hill and, on occasion, Whistler's Pub in Cinnaminson. ;)
