Just across the river from Philadelphia, known as the restaurant capital of the U.S., South Jersey has learned a thing or two about fine dining from its big city neighbor. Throughout the Delaware River Region, an abundance of award-winning restaurants (www.njra.org) serve fine cuisine in a comfortable setting, along with South Jersey's signature small town hospitality.

In Camden County, Cherry Hill (www.cherryhillregional.com) is a dining hotspot. Along the major corridors of Route 70, 73 and 38, you'll find a number of fine restaurants dotting the landscape. For casual dining, Cooper's Bar & Bistro at the Hilton Hotel (www.hilton.com) offers a warm atmosphere and the high energy of the action of an open kitchen. Recently opened at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center, the Elephant & Castle (www.elephantcastel.com) serves traditional British fare as well as all the American favorites along with an extensive line of spirits. And at the Holiday Inn in Cherry Hill (www.holidayinnofcherryhill.com), the Red Hot & Blue Memphis Pit Barbeque restaurant features a variety of choices from salads to their signature ribs and desserts.

Also nearby, Pennsauken (www.pennsaukennj.com) has a few restaurants to brag about, including the area landmark The Pub. And in historic Haddonfield (www.haddonfieldnj.org) BYOB restaurants, cafes and coffee houses, luncheonettes and delis, candy stores and pastry shops line the main street.

A few miles away in Burlington County, Mt. Laurel hotels have an array of fine restaurants to choose from. At the Radisson Hotel (www.radisson.com), Ashley's Restaurant is critically acclaimed for thier ambience, service and American Cuisine, and Legends Lounge serves light meals in a relaxed sports atmosphere. At the Ramada Inn (www.ramada.com), Wellington's features fine continental and contemporary American cuisine in an Old World setting, and the Polo Lounge offers the area's Grandest Martini as well as a variety of cigars. Onsite at the Wyndham Hotel (www.wyndham.com) is TerraNova, a Cal-Ital bar and grille centered around a harmonious blend of Northern Californian and Italian cuisine. And at the Doubletree Guest Suites (www.doubletree.com), GG's Restaurant offers fresh beef, seafood, poultry, and game in a quiet atmosphere.

The historic Rancocas Valley (www.rancocasvalley.com) is also home to a number of impressive restaurants nestled in small town settings. The main thoroughfare of Medford Village (www.mefordvillage.org) has a wealth of charming restaurants along brick sidewalks and tree- shaded streets. Here, diners can enjoy the famous Braddock's Tavern (www.braddocks.com), a National Historical Landmark where food and lodging have been offered on the site since 1823.

You can also find a variety of impressive restaurants and shops throughout Burlington City (www.scream.org/bc/). One popular restaurant, the Café Gallery, features fine dining and constantly changing art exhibits overlooking the Delaware River. No South Jersey restaurant tour would be complete without a visit to Chambersburg in the state capital of Trenton. Offering an eclectic mix of American, Italian and other ethnic foods, dozens of superb restaurants dot the district. And nearby in the heart of downtown Princeton, Palmer Square (www.palmersquare.com) is a stylish collection of restaurants, shops, offices and residences surrounding the Town Green and the historic Nassau Inn (www.nassauinn.com).

For a taste of the good life, South Jersey restaurants aim to please.
