We were just in Wildwood Crest for a week (nice place but WHAT a culinary wasteland, ugh!) and unfortunately were unable to get to Cape May for a meal because the place I wanted to eat at, 410 Bank Street refused to take a reservation for 8 people (we were 2 families of 8). They told me we could get 2 4's but "they probably won't be anywhere near each other". In other words, they didn't want my business. Too bad, since they got an excellent review in the NY Times a few weeks ago. I eventually decided to give up trying to have a decent meal and ate at mediocre places in Wildwood where you have the pleasure of waiting for an hour for a table if you don't get there by 5pm. Not my idea of a fun vacation.

Actually, we did have one really good meal in Wildwood. There's a pizza place on the boardwalk, Mack's Pizza. Great thin crust, excellent pizza. And much cheaper than the other meals we ate (and BTW, pizza is not usually my idea of a gourmet meal, but given the other options this was the best available).

What time of year will you be in Cape May? During the off season, many restaurants there are closed. There's a huge family restaurant about 15 miles outside of Cape May called Menz's that has absolutely fantastic food, but they're only opened from sometime in April through early October, if I remember correctly.

Some of my favorite restaurants in Cape May are The Pelican Club, Water's Edge, & 410 Bank Street.

Stan, my folks have a summer house in the Villas, whenever I visit them we always go to Menz's, great food! Also you mentioned the curly fries in another post, yes how I miss those fries, can remember driving from Philly down the shore for the day, just to get a taste of those fries. Am living in San Diego now, miss the fries, cheese steaks and decent seafood. Out here they don't say we are going to the "shore" it's the "beach", still can't get used to that. Oh by the way came upon "Pat's Cheesesteaks" web site and sent them an e-mail telling them how much I enjoyed their cheesesteaks when I lived in Philly and how we used to drive down from Northeast Philly after the Boulevard dances just to get them. They e-mailed me back and asked for my address and sent me one of their shirts. Will wear it with pride.

Hi, Ana

We love 410 Bank, although it's a little high-priced. Also consistently very good and more reasonably priced is Peaches at Sunset, on the southern edge of town on the road that takes you to the lighthouse. For breakfast, try the Mad Batter. There's another great place for breakfast right on the beach - it's an Irish name but darned if I can remember it, but it's the only restaurant that's actually built onto the sand so it's not hard to find!

Have a great time!

Liz

Enjoy!
