Ron,

If you have a car and don't mind a little ride away from the strip (or a $12 or so cab ride), I'd like to recommend Mayflower Cuisinier, an upscale Chinese-French fusion restaurant. Serene, with gracious service, the restaurant is located in a cookie-cutter outdoor mall. The restaurant is on the low-end of your price range; dress is casual.

A couple suggestions: In that range, get yourself off the Strip and try The Tillerman on Flamingo Rd. at Channel 10 Drive. Also, P.F. Chang's on Paradise at Flamingo is wonderful. Melrose on Sahara at Eastern, while farther out, is also a good place to try...interesting menu. : : -- : random ron from wacousta [email removed] : "when the going gets weird, [email removed] : the weird turn pro" --hst [email removed] :

Sorry, I must disagree. On my last trip to Vegas, I tried the Tillerman. First of all, realize that you're looking at $16-$20 round-trip if you're cabbing it, as the Tillerman is not all that close to the Strip. Now, about the food. Does "woefully overpriced" cover it? Yes, they have a full selection of seafood (and steaks), but there's really nothing all that exceptional about any of it, except -- sorry to beat a dead horse -- the price.

A better idea, if I may: Get thee unto The Steak House at Circus Circus. Yes, I said Circus Circus, which should not put you off. This is simply THE finest steak house in Vegas. Order yourself a crab cocktail to get things rolling, partake of the very fine black bean soup (included in the price of the meal), and move on to a supremely aged steak to round it all up. If you're feeling like a real pig, order a nice, rare slice of prime rib and ask them to sear it quickly over the mesquite. The prime is enormous; it's supposed to check in at 24 ounces, but the slab I sampled last time was well above that.

Oh, yes . . . the cocktails: very nice, as well. I'm partial to a Jack Daniel's perfect Manhattan on the rocks with a twist. They do 'em with crushed ice and they're velvet. The wine list isn't much, but I submit you won't care when everything else is so, so right. Best of all, you can enjoy all of the above in the price range you mentioned -- about $50 per person.

And after all those raves, I'd better add that I have no affiliation with Circus Circus. I'm just a very satisfied Steak House repeat customer who fully intends to keep right on repeating, trip after trip.

Word on the streets is that Gates in Las Vegas closed a year ago. Don't have first hand info on that, just what I've been told. Worth a look in the phonebook though.
