Some of the longstanding independent steakhouses have closed or slipped badly, but some still exist. Original Caniglias (6th and something, Little Italy district) is still great. Ditto on Angie's, 10th and Pacific, Gorat's at 49th and Leavenworth, and Mr C's, 30th and Fort (excellent food, decor is, well ;-). (Johnny's in South Omaha has slipped VERY BADLY!) If there is any particular style of restaurant unique to Omaha, those are it. For French/Continental there's French Cafe, Chez Chong, and Cafe de Paris. There are tons of non-chain authentic Mexican, Oriental, BBQ, ethnic etc. all around. The latest 'trend' if there is any, are the all-you-can-scarf casino buffets. There are three of them just across the river. These are much better than most of the LV buffets, but the lines are murder. There are all kinds of trendy and quasi-trendy restaurants in the Old Market district. If you can be a bit more specific as to what you want, I and the others can give you some definite suggestions and/or warnings. Good day JSW

Omaha suggestions?

It's been many years since I had business trips to Omaha. Are Anthony's (steak place with enormous cow, on 72nd if memory serves) or Stella's (burger place in Bellevue) still around? We looked forward to going to both of 'em on every trip. Was in Omaha two weeks ago (on my way to San Diego :). River Front district is a "yuppified" (read urban renewal) district which look like it had sever nice places. (It is slightly southeast from city center. Corner of Capitol and St-Mary's I think. Call Embassy Suites in Omaha and as how to get there. River Front is across the street from them.) Chose the River Front Brewery. So-so choice. One out of the seven beers was spoiled and should not have been served. Menu was quite varied, chose a garlic pizza. Came very burned, with the outside crust inedible. It was close to closing, perhaps the staff was just tired (as were we). Several bistro style restraints in the same area which I'll try next time I'm there. Food in San Diego and La Jolla was much better (as was the beer :)) Brian -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Walter H. wrote: > > Jack W. wrote: > > >Omaha (somewhere in Middle America <bfg>) has just about everything. > >Some of the longstanding independent steakhouses have closed or slipped > >badly, but some still exist. > > It's been many years since I had business trips to Omaha.
