The best local place (i.e. non-Outback or Lone Star) IMO is Gorat's, located at about 49th and Center Streets. It's allegedly Warren Buffett's favorite restaurant. It's so good it'll make you cry. It's a popular place - if you wanna go there, you might call and make a reservation: (402) 551-3733 Another good place is Farmer Brown's, located in the Omaha suburb of Papillion at about 82nd Street and Highway 370 (a mere 5 miles down the highway from my house). For the old-style Italian/steakhouse atmosphere, try Piccolo Pete's at 2202 S. 20th Street. If you decide to show up, gimme a holler - maybe we can all get together. I haven't had a good steak in...oh, a week. : ) Jason Quick [email removed] Carolyn B. wrote: > My husband and I plan to drive from Boise to Omaha in > Search of the best steaks (filet mignon) in the country. > We feel we'll find them in Nebraska. Some people. : ) Seriously, I think good steaks can be had anywhere in the areas where cattle are raised mostly on grain instead of range-fed. Seems to make the beef more tender and not as green (uccch). Naturally, how the meat is treated once it's dead is very important, too. The place widely recognized as best in Omaha, Gorat's Steakhouse, ages their own meat. I've seen video of their operation, and let me tell you, these folks are *serious*. The side of beef that I'm getting in a couple of weeks will have hung for two weeks after slaughter, and that seems like a minimum when you have it done at a private locker. The best houses also surely have their own suppliers - often, the steers that win the 4-H contests at the state and county fairs are bought by these restaurants or some of the bigger local grocery stores. Down in Orlando they have a place called Charley's Steak House that serves great steaks. They cook there steaks over a hardwood fire of oak, orange, grapefruit . Bring you a plastic wrapped sample of their steak cuts so you may choose which one you want. Price wasn't outlandish. Service was great. They also have the best fried shrimp I've ever had in my life. My mother-in-law didn't want such a big steak. I tried one of her shrimps. Wonderful Here's a place that sells prime steaks mail order. They are one of the best. They provide beef for a couple of the steak places people have mentioned. www.allenbrothers.com

AFAIK, they don't serve Rover Remoulade, either. : ) If you want a really *huge* steak, head on over to Rube's, a grill-your-own place in Booneville, Iowa, just west of Des Moines. Huge, damned good steaks. They wet-age their meat. I once had a 28-ounce ribeye at the other Rube's (Montour, IA). Polished that whole sucker off, too. One review is here: http://desmoinesregister.com/dgdb/dining/archives/rubes070899.html I'd agree with Bruce about the Prime Rib, too. Dunno what it is, but PR is hugely popular around here, and rightly so. Beautiful meat, cooked beautifully. Another good regional place is Austin's - they have good meat, and the sides are quite good too. (Try the cheese fries.) Jack,
PP has some of the best Prime Rib in SW Iowa, and resonable
prices, too. What's in a name as long as the BEEF is good? q:^) Maybe they should have called it the Bitchin' Bulldog. :)
