From the reader's poll of The Riverfront Times (copyright 1995, Hartmann Publishing, Inc.):

Best Barbecue

1. KC Masterpiece
2. Phil's
3. Charlotte's Rib
4. Damon's
5. Memphis Best
6. Chaney's
7. Red'z Rib Shack
8. Rib Crib
9. Gladstone's
10. Penny's

I eat at KC Masterpiece a lot, since it's near my office, and think they do a great job with their ribs (although I'm most partial to their beef burnt ends). You should also note that some local preference seems to tend toward a "boiled-on, sloppy" approach to barbecue, where the meat is grilled and then parboiled in the sauce (some of the "top 10" fall into this category.

Charlotte's Rib is also one of my faves (as noted in another posting, "Charlotte" is the late Charlotte Peters, local TV pioneer and mother of Mike Peters of editorial cartooning and "Mother Goose and Grimm" fame).

I'd also put on my personal list McCrary's Original, a classic shack barbecue in a converted service station north of downtown -- true soul-food Q, with a "hot" version that really packs a kick -- as well as Donohue's, which is down in the Valley Park area and which I think only does ribs on the weekend.
