Coming all the way from the Netherlands, I'm betting you're visiting Washington University, which is just outside the St. Louis city limits. In that case, the suburbs known as University City and Clayton will be closest to you in terms of food districts. Fio's La Fourchette will cost you at least US$25 per person for food, but they also feature seconds on anything you decide that you like. Cafe Provencal is more loud than intimate, but has very good Provencal (what else) cooking and wines, and is probably $10 cheaper than Fio's. Cafe de France downtown (about 8 miles east of Wash. U.) offers basically classic French in a nice salon-like atmosphere; if you can travel (and excuse my assumption that you'll be at Wash. U. if you won't), Reserve 1867 in St. Charles is in a fabulous 130-year-old building (hence the name) and has both a chef and a patissier. Cool place.
