Chris,

   My favorite, hands down, is Steve Coles Cafe Allegro  (1815 West 39th;
816/561-3663). Chez Panisse-like cuisine w/ Oriental influences. The added benefit is a teriffic wine list. Price is moderate/expensive.

   Another you must check out is on the way to KC. In Fayette, MO; not too
far off the Interstate, is The Black Walnut Cafe. Sort of Bradley Ogden-type cusine. They (Don & Missy Fortel) used to run one of Santa Fe's best restaurants. I haven't eaten there yet but just KNOW it will be good when I try it in July. Prices will be inexp/moderate.

Stroud's (85th and Troost) is a wonderful place for fried chicken, mashed potatoes, cottage fries, etc.

There are many great BBQ restaurants in the KC area. My favorite remains Arthur Bryant's (18th and Brooklyn), but I've had great BBQ at many places. Check out Remus Powers' (a/k/a Ardie Davis) BBQ Pocket Guide for descriptions of these restaurants.

And for fast food burgers, fries, and shakes, try Winstead's.
