Not sure what you mean by "nice" Mexican restaurants. My experience is that there is often an inverse relationship between the decor and the quality of the food. Try El Maguey, which has several locations in the area, El Tio Pepe in St. Charles, or the little place next to the Velvet Freeze just north of 270 on Lindbergh (Joe B, help me out with that name) for really good food in unpretentious atmosphere. Ramon's in Clayton and Hacienda on Manchester in Rock Hill are nicer looking, but one step down in quality IMHO. I believe it was started by the founder of Casa Gallardo, but it is different.

I've only been to the one on Watson Rd near Glenwood (1 block W of Crestwood Mall/Sappington Rd). Their prices are not great but food is; you won't go away hungry either. 2nd location is on Tesson Ferry I think. Further east on Watson is El Maguay (sp?) which is a diner type atmosphere but good food & good prices. There are probably other locations as well. Good luck! Lee Burns

Casa Gallardo was sold (circa 1976) to General Mills resulting in generic bland canned frozen pre-fab (add your own adjectives) food. When it was owned by Ray Gallardo, the food was fresh and tasty. If he's involved with Ramon's, it is probably worth the visit. Jungmann
Pueblo Nuevo in Hazelwood. It is on Lindbergh about 1/4 to 1/2 mile north of village square. It is on the same side of the road of Village Square. The decor is not too much but the food is excellent. Oh, it is in a strip mall with the velvet freeze. On 19 Dec 1997 03:41:46 GMT, "Elizabeth Haslett" wrote: >I was wondering if anyone has any recommenations for any nice Mexican >resturants. Ramon Gallardo owns Ramon's Jalapeno in Clayton and the cited restaurant on Olive near Ross, which was also a Jalapeno to start with but did a LCD on its menu to become Salsa. Rumor has it Salsa is now for sale. That's been a really tough spot for restaurants. joe b. Jerry J. wrote in article ... > > >Ramon's Salsa, in West County, is very good. I'm glad someone cited Arcelia's, which I'm fond of. The place in Rock Hill is Nachomama's, more of a Tex-Mex than pure Mexican, but very good. Wouldn't it be nice if we got an upscale Mexican a la Frontera Grill in Chi? joe b. Elaine A. wrote in article ... > Eric B. wrote: > > > > Pueblo Nuevo in Hazelwood. Pueblo Nuevo, thanks. I have become increasingly unhappy with Ruiz on N. Lindbergh. My last experience there was a nightmare. Slow service, lukewarm food, and the thermostat must have been set on 45! (which might explain the temp of the food). Someone wrote: Pueblo Nuevo may be about the best in the area, but I would also recommend Chuy's on Clayton Avenue in St. Louis and Chevy's in Olivette. The only good thing that I can say about Casa Gallardo is that it uses cilantro. And yet the last time I was there (at the one in South County), it was packed. I wonder why.
