What area of St. Louis are you to be staying? I live in North County and enjoy both Pueblo Nuevo and Ruiz. Both are on Lindbergh, the former in Hazelwood, the latter in Florissant. Ben [email removed]

I strongly second the recommendation of Pueblo Neuvo, which has wonderful, authentic food. I love their chicharrones and birria, which are unduplicated elsewhere in St. Louis. Pueblo Nuevo is pretty easy to find---270 to Lindbergh, go North, it's on your left in about a mile.

More ordinary, but tasty (the Chile Verde is wonderful) is Arcelia's in Lafayette Square. Tex-Mex, somewhat pricier food can be found at Ramon's Jalapeno in Clayton. The ingredients are fresh and good and the offerings are not dull. If you'll be out in St. Peters, try La Chata.

For a very nice atmosphere and consistently good food, the Hacienda on Manchester Rd. in Kirkwood is one of St. Louis' main stays.

It all depends on what you like. The Hacienda serves more Tex-Mex food than authentic Mexican. I grew up eating there (I remember when that building was Le Chateau, even), and I got bored with it a LOOOONG time ago.

Pueblo Nuevo always good, but Ruiz has been very erratic the last few times I was there. El Tio Pepe in St. Charles is good and El Maguey (two or three locations) also

Thus far I haven't seen any recommendations for what I think is the best Mexican restaurant in town, Pueblo Solis on Hampton about six blocks south of Chippewa. (south St. Louis city)

Kiwi mentioned chicarrones -- this reminded me of La Tropicana at 5001 Lindenwood just off the intersection of Kingshighway and Chippeway (again, south St. Louis city), a Latin grocer that runs a deli-like restaurant with very good authentic Mexican and Cuban specialties.

If your visit takes you to fairly far west St. Louis County, there's a nice family-run place called Mi Lupita on Manchester about 6 miles west of 270; on the way out there, you'll also pass one of the El Magueys that Dick mentioned.

In mid-north St. Louis County, relatively close to the airport, I can give a second-hand recommendation (a foodie I trust likes it) for Las Palmas on Woodson Road.
