Both are closer to traditional Mexican food than the mostly standardized, mostly boring food served at the Casa Gallardos and Haciendas. I particularly recommend the chile verde at Arcelia's (or the Chilaquiles if you are there for breakfast and don't mind a little grease) and the birria, pozole and chicharrones at El Pueblo Nuevo. Muy Sabrosa!! You can get excellent Mediterranean food (very close to the Greek variety) at Saleem's in the Delmar Loop. If you're a drinker, try the Garlic Bloody Mary. There are a number of little Gyro houses around, as well as the remarkably good Athens Cafe in the malls, and the Olympia Kebab House (a little one on Forsyth in Clayton and the big one on McCausland). Good Greek or Mexican rest?
I just moved here from Wash. DC and was recommended to go to Saleems for Mediterranean and was sorely disappointed. The food is all covered with a horrible sweet garlic sauce, as if each of the dishes don't have enough flavor on their own (maybe its a mid-west thing?) The dishes were not incredibly large and not at all authentic. I am still searching for great mediteranean food here in St. Louis, but if all else fails I will fly back to DC and get it there from the Lebannese Taverna (hmmmm, goood).
