KC has plenty of great places to eat. Arthur Bryant's BBQ at 17th & Brooklyn is a must. Also Stroud's (ask for directions but south side KC just off The Paseo) for pan-fried chicken, veggies, rolls. Prices are reasonable. Note: you aren't going for the decor in either place, you are going to eat and that you'll do well indeed.
