I was at Minneapolis around end of July for a few days (I had to attend a conference) and we stayed in downtown (marriot City Center), around the Nicolette Mall. One great place was Ruth Chris's Steak House. I know it's a national chain, but you can smell the fragrance of perfect steak for as far as a block away, and the wind wasn't even blowing! The steak are to kill for, and their flourless chocolate cake just put me over the top!!!

Another good place is down the Nicolette Mall. It was a BBQ rib place. I have forgotten the name of the place, but it is very easy to get there. Walk along Nicolette Ave. in the direction away from the Federal Bank and the Mississippi River, where you will encounter a few hotels and such. You will then see a French restaurant (It's also a good place with a fair price). The BBQ place is just down the corner. They have very good ribs at downhome price, with a very homey atmosphere. I apologize for not able to remember the name of these places, but nothing is coming to mind right now.

For good atmosphere, go to the Italian restaurant in the Marriot City Center. At dinner time the staff doubles as entertainers and sing various tunes, including selections from "The Phantom of the Opera." They're actually quite good! The food is also excellent, and they have a selection of after dinner drinks that will enhance your enjoyment of food.

As far as I can remember, their local speciality is the walleye fish (pike?), served in various styles, including deep fried in a beer batter. If you go in October, you're liable to bump into the Oktoberfest crowd, and that just might prove to be a good bet (unless you detest German food, that is.)

A couple of recommendations in Minneapolis:

Goodfellow's, on Nicolette Mall 612.332.4800
    Contemporary American

D'Amico Cucina, 100 N 6th 612.338.2401
    Northern Italian

Azur (can't find the card -- it's on the top floor of a downtown
      shopping center) Mediterranian.

Had 3 excellent meals at these three places last year.

Cheers,

There is a (fairly) new restaurant called "Mitterhauser's". I have not been there, but I know the chef, and have been to his previous restaurants. He had on on Nicolett Mall a while ago, and most recently he had place in St. Peter, Minn. Klaus Mitterhauser is Austrian, and very talented. There are Austrian specialties on the menu, as well as some lighter dishes, including some vegetarian choices. Should be good.

Address: 2640 Lyndale AVe. S., Minneapolis, Minn. 872-4808. I plan to try it myself when I am in Minn. in Dec.

In Mpls there's several places down on the river; and in the same area a Polish restaurant that used to be excellent; and in the IDS tower there used to be one of the bet French restaurants around

In St Paul:
Downtown - Hotel St. Paul Grill - excellent food
West 7th - just past 7 corners:
Cosentino's - best pizza in the area - great Italian food - served
   cafeteria style - Italian Market/Deli
  Mancini's - about 1 mile up from Cosentino's - great steaks
Down on the river industrial area - Awadas - good steaks & fish and
great LaHamMishwe<sp?> (lamb shishkabob with garlic sauce, lavosh,
tabouli salad, Lebanese rice) - and if you don't order the lamb
you can still ask for the tabouli with lavosh & garlic sauce
  instead of the regular salad
Summit Hill (past the Cathedral) on Grand Ave - numerous shops &
restaurants to satisfy any taste including:
At Dale & Grand is a great Mexican restaurant
Next block up, Grand & Avon is a Japanese restaurant
Greek (can't remember the name) - great lemon chicken soup - Grand
     & Grotto
Across the street is Godfather's pizza - good
Ciatti's - Grand & Victoria - what Italian Gardens would like to be -
fantastic "bottomless" salad bowl - great Italian foods - at lunch
time - enjoy the Caesar salad
Next to Ciatti's is a capeccino house that has desserts that are so
     sinful and decadent
Diagonally across the street is HagenDaz & coffe house right next to
a croissant place that has plain, dessert and sandwich style
     croissants
Grand & Lexington - the Lexington (the Lex) - has two sides to eat
at - on the left is more formal - food presented (like Caesar salad)
at the table - on the right is more 'pub-like' and cozy - good food -
     nice Steak Diane
Up Grand a bit is the Green Mill (they've expanded to several places
around the twin cities, but this is the original)
Out by Snelling is Lindy's Steakhouse - homestyle cooking, non descript
  salad, but great steaks

That's all I can think of right now
