The most popular of these is The Village Wok (Perhaps Chinese) and a place on University Ave. called Hoa Bien. However, there is an excelent one (undiscovered) in the East Metro - called "Duc's" - corner of Century & Minnihaha (10th).

Try the Chinese restaurants near the University Of Minnesota:

Village Wok - in Stadium Village on Washington Ave. SE

Shuang Cheng - in Dinkytown on 4th St. SE

Peking Garden - Corner Of University Ave. & Washington Ave SE. - ask for their extended menu!

Rainbow Cafe - 27th St. & Nicollet Ave. S.

If you want steak, Minneapolis has the generic chain restaurants, including Morton's and Ruth's Chris. It also has the locally-owned Murray's, "Home of the Silver Butter Knife Steak." But the king of them all is Manny's, a steakhouse with attitude in the Greenway complex connected to the Hyatt. It's worldclass.

It's been years since I was in MSP, but I know that the Sri Lanka Curry House is still there. They had very good, spicy curries. Heed their warning; don't have the hot or extra hot unless you are sure you know what you are doing.

Is Lindy's in Arden Hills still there? They basically had three things on the menu, steak, steak and steak. Excellent dead cow.

Yes, and it still looks like a 1930's roadhouse that's adapted and survived into the '90's, which it is.

: La Cucuracha on Dale St. in St. Paul is probably one of the best.

I discovered a very good hole in the wall mexican restaurant in Uptown Minneapolis. It is called Taco Morelos at 26th street and Nicollet. Be warned that this place is real hole in the wall, with plastic table clothes and no liquior license, but the food is very good and spicy and the prices are unbelievable low.

Suman Misra,

If you are downtown Minneapolis I would suggest going to Prontos. This is a bistro style Italian restaurant inside of a hotel. I forgot the name of the hotel but it is worth looking up in the phone book. They have a causal cafe area that is designed around the chefs work area. The restaurant is designed well from top to bottom. I have been here maybe ten times but have only tried two dishes. I always get the Linguine con Pollo Picante. This dish is a pasta with a spicy thick peanut flavored sauce. It may be a little too spicy for some but I love it. The main reason I wrote this message is the restaurants pastry chef. If you enjoy desserts you are in for a treat. This man creates and specializes every dessert out of his work area. I suggest going into the formal area of the restaurant and watch him create some amazing desserts. Very artistic. He has a way of making his desserts rise from the plate in a simple and pleaseing way. These desserts are more expensive then most ($8.00) but well worth the money.
Please go to this resaurant if you are looking for Italian food. They
are moderaely priced ($8.00 - $14.00) for pastas and pizza.

Enjoy,

Good eating? My picks would be:

Northeast: I like the Holy Land Deli. Great Gyros (biggest and best I've had). They also have a little market there.

South: Falafel King is good for takeout.
Joey D's (42nd and almost Hiawatha) for hot dog type stuff

Mallo'mer: I liked the Rainforest Cafe (my wife didn't...thought the meatloaf was weird. I agree, but I liked it all the same...and you can't beat the atmosphere!). For more "american" cusine I actually like Planet Hollywood. If you go for early dinner (like before 5:30), there's little wait, the service is usually quick (faster they serve you, the faster someone else can come in I suppose), and the food is good, if you're looking for basic American fare.

Eden Prairie: There's a new BBQ joint in the little strip mall across from Eden Prairie Center Excellent!

Coffee Shops: With only limited experience, I prefer:

Minneapolis: The Boathouse Cafe (42nd and Cedar Av. So.). Good coffee, good prices, yummy sandwiches, and hand-packed ice cream (made in St. Paul). There's a little play area for the kids, and live music sometimes.

St. Paul: The Zephyr Cafe (Union Depot Place, downtown). Good Coffee, good prices, bagel sandwiches, and hot dogs, and really good pastries, desserts, and try the chicken chili. BTW for those of you who work downtown, it's got skyway access.

The Rain Forest Cafe at the Mall of America is absolutely fabulous! Go early for lunch, avoid the wait.

My very favorite restaurant in Minneapolis is the Loring Cafe, downtown in Loring Park. Great food, funky atmosphere.

Baker's Ribs. Kind of hard to find if you don't know where to look. It's right next to the Pizza Hut on 212 - Ciatti's and pet food warehouse are behind it. It's not that new, incidentally. I've been eating there for more than a year.

Big 10 on Washington has good burgers. As does Stub 'n Herbs (get the 1-pounder).

I HAVE to disagree with this - I was there last week and found
the food mediocre and overpriced. I had some sort of Jamaican chicken sandwich and my friend had seafood pasta which she thought was decent. It is a worthwhile vist, though, if you get off on rank cheesiness (which we do) - "Misra, party of 2, your adventure is about to BEGIN. Meet your server under the ELEPHANT." I haven't laughed that hard in years. And what about the thunderstorm every 20 minutes? ROTFLMAO

I think Big 10 is what I was thinking of. The burgers were great but their pop was horrible. It had an odd, bitter flavor to it.

For those of us that are a little frugal but still want a good meal, try the cafeteria in the lower level of Fairview Southdale Hospital. They serve good healthy meals at a very reasonable price 7 days a week.

Taco Morelos is in the Whittier or Wedge area (26th and Blaisdell). Whittier and Lake Street in general are becoming the "little Mexico" of the Twin Cities...more Mexicans in this part of town than in West St. Paul now, and many good restaurants are popping up as a result. My favorite is Me Gusto on 4th and Lake--anything on their menu is good, although they specialize in the seafood cuisine of the Pacific coast. They have a liquor license, too. Taco Morelos has excellent burritos at an excellent price. El Norteno Market and Deli just opened in my neighborhood, but I haven't had a chance to try their burritos yet.

Hey, that's my neighborhood too!

I've eaten at El Norteno once. It's not as good as Taco M., but the burrito I had was OK. I'm a vegetarian, and there's not much there for me. My girlfreind said the potato and beef burrito was real good though. You can also get a package of tortillas for 25 cents there. Good deal in the grocery department.

I noticed they're closed for vacation until August 29th, just to save people a fruitless trip. While they're closed, try Harry Singh's Carribean Restaurant at 31st and Cedar. If you want to be crippled, Harry can manage it. If you're not a hero, the food is great. I recommend the jerk pork and the callaloo.

Let me know if anyone has the rum-chocolate ice cream. I've been going for five years and I've never been there when he wasn't out....
