Let me repeat my recommendation for Helmut's Kaffeehaus, located in Nashville, about 20-30 SSW of Grand Rapids.  It is a serious kitchen in a completely unexpected location.  There is also supposed to be an excellent natural foods restaurant in GR, but the name escapes me...

Try Charley's Crab.  It's downtown.  Also, any of the three Arnie's restaurants are good and they each have their own bakery.  Check out the Grand Rapids Brewing Co. (think that's the name) on 28th St.  You can eat and watch beer being brewed at the same time!  The beer tastes better after the second swallow.  There are some other restaurants that have been recommended to me but since I haven't there personally I'm not sure about them--Duba's, located NE, is one.
