NEVER eat at the El Camino Real Hotel in Cancun. I got the worst case of Montezuma's revenge I've ever had. Don't stay at that hotel either. They turn off the AC to save money and you roast in the room. One of the worst hotels I've ever stayed at. Never again.

From Detroit it's only 3 hours nonstop. Weather is almost always perfect. You're on both the gulf and the caribbean, so there is a nice breeze. The resort has really only been around for 20-25 years. It was one that the Mexican govt decided to build to boost tourism so it's a completely modern and new city that was built where there was a tiny fishing village. They have their own water, but I'd still be careful with either drinking it or eating washed uncooked veggies. In your salads you can squeeze a little lime juice over it and toss. To do: water sports, diving, snorkeling, the Mayan ruins, sun. The Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza are some of the best anywhere. It's a day trip from Cancun by bus. You eat near the ruins. Very HOT, eat your salt tablets, but it is a must see. We also went to the ruins at Tulum down the coast, but they are nothing like Chichen Itza. Around Cancun, Ride the Bus. It's cheap and the drivers work on commission [read: the more passengers the more pay]. Cabs are very expensive, but regulated. Food: anything you want, but be sure to try Mayan, and stuff yourself with seafood. Cancun is such a modern and mostly brand new resort that they offer every kind of cuisine available. For Mayan, try downtown (in the village). enjoy
