The Cafe Esquadrille was always nice for lunch, not cheap, but not very expensive. I haven't had lunch there in years, but I went there occassionally when I worked in Burlington. Don't try to do lunch in 30 minutes there though. Chuck Demas Needham, Mass.

Woburn restaurants?

I am hoping : > for some info about good Chinese, Thai, maybe a good diner : > type place for breakfast. : Bad Chinese: The Weylus in the Woburn Mall. : Good Chinese: The New Asia Cafe near Staples. I will second the recommendation of the Chinese restaurant near Staples, but I believe that Ms. Margo meant to say Far East Cafe. It is especially good between 11:30 - 3:00 on weekends when they serve their buffet style dim sum. Completely different (and more authentic) than their usual weekly menu fare. I would also recommend the Thai restaurant on Rt. 3A in Billerica -- I forget the name, but it is in the tiny strip mall just before the Billerica Mall. The owner is from Hong Kong, and he is very friendly. The food was quite good too. As for diners, there is one on Route 38 about 1 mile west of 95. Again, I forget the name, but it is a traditional Airstream-style diner. There is Legal Seafood in the Burlington Maul, Bertucci's near the Billerica Mall, Cheng's Wok (not bad Chinese) in Burlington on 3A, Changhai (very good Chinese takeout) in Lexington, not too far from the Burlington Mall, Scoops, which makes a real roast turkey sandwich with stuffing and cranberry sauce right on the sandwich -- sounds odd, but tastes great -- they are in Burlington on 3A. There is also an Indian grocery store on 3A, across from the Burlington High School. They have some take out foods -- samosas, vada, etc. Very inexpensive, very tasty and good for a quick lunchtime Indian food fix. That said, the Burlington/Woburn area is pretty much a gastronomic wasteland. Good luck, David

I've been in East Woburn a little over a year (up the street from my in-laws, who've been here forty years) -- if I can be of any help, please let me know. (I continue to believe that of all places around 128, I made the best choice.) You said "Near Burlington", so that's the other side from me. Ms. Margo already answered about the Far East near Staples. I've posted about it here. I also like, for Mexican, "On the Border", but it's a good example of what Chi-Chi's used to serve, not gourmet. In the Center, I don't like the place opposite Salem Street on Main Street. (It replaced a very nice place.) On the Salem Street side of Main Street, the China Kitchen isn't bad. The new Oriental, south of Woburn Square, isn't bad for what it is -- try the #19 lunch combo of General Tso's chicken and teriyaki beef. China Mama, next to Walgreen's in the South End, has very good hot and sour soup. (Beefy, peppery, not too much chile oil.) All the pizza in Woburn is either Papa Gino's or Greek; no true (NY-style) Neapolitan. The soon-to-open "taste of the North End" at Main and Montvale could be OK, there were two Neapolitan places there before. (Best video store: Cross Street, at Holton (= Nashua = Wood) just over the line in Winchester. $1 for all tapes Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tell them I sent you.) Dough-C-Donuts in the Center had a loyal following, don't know what it has now that it's under new management. There are a few lunch places near Montvale and Main. Santoro's makes good subs in the Center, Lentini's in East Woburn also, and Marco's is a very good Italian deli in the Center. It's not too far a hike from Four Corners over the hill to Lexington: Peking Garden and Yangtze River are there (also Steven's, Starbucks, etc), or just a little further and you're at Moody Street, Waltham.

Certainly has very fresh-tasting crust. But, not near the Burlington side of Woburn. In another vein, if one is willing to venture as far as Lexington for Chinese, another spot to consider is The Great Wall in Bedford at the Great Road (Super Stop & Shop) Shopping Center. I find their food fresher-tasting than at Lexington's Yangtze (though their hot and sour soup is nowhere near as good). Ken Pogran

I am not that impressed with the food at the Indian place - It is better than many mall food; but after several tries, I have yet to get hot (temp- wise; not spice -wise) food. I only eat there for lunch so one would think the food would be warm at least.
