I realize you said you don't love buffets, but... I LOVE the brunch at Blue
Room in Cambridge (Kendall Square). Yes, it's a buffet, but the food is
 absolutely fabulous.

Metro in the Porter Exchange is excellent (and T-accessible). Their
pastries were so amazing my companions and I were forced to buy extra
to bring home. If there are better croissants available elsewhere
outside of France, I'd be surprised. The lobster and tarragon omelet
was a bit heavy on the tarragon (where a little goes a long way) but
still an order of magnitude better than your average brunch fare.

Christopher's (also in Porter Square, but not in the Exchange) has a
good reputation for brunch, though I've never partaken of it myself.

If you like gospel music, you might try the House of Blues in Harvard
Square. I've heard the food is outstanding (if you like Southern
cuisine), although it doesn't meet your not-a-buffet criterion.

I do know of one other place that breaks both the not-a-buffet and the
not-in-a-hotel criteria, but is well worth it nonetheless: Henrietta's
Table in the Charles Hotel, Harvard Square. Despite being in a hotel,
it doesn't feel like it because its windows look out onto a big
courtyard. And yes, it's a buffet...but what a buffet! Not only can
you get an omelet or frittata made to order, but you can get
peel-and-eat shrimp and raw oysters and cherrystones (in season)!!
They also have several lunch-type entrees, and the desserts are to die
for (or possibly from). It's expensive, but you get all-you-can-eat
raw oysters, which makes it worthwhile in my book.

I'd have to agree. I enjoy both the food and atmosphere of brunch at the
Blue Room. I like that they put out only a few servings of each dish so
that nothing sits for any great length of time.
