OK, my two cents. I cast my vote for the meatballs (and, by extension, meatball subs) at Pasta Etc. Etc. in Lexington (next to the Bank Boston ATM in the little strip mall known as "Countryside" on Woburn St., cor. of Lowell St. and NOT to be confused with Lexington House of Pizza next door to Ace Hardware across the street). Pasta Etc. Etc. features a lot of "home made" Italian foods, and my wife stopped even trying to make meatballs when we discovered these. They sell 'em by the pound to take home (without sauce), and they sell 'em in their meatball subs. While I'm at it, I'll put in a plug for their lasagna, which they make with bechamel, not the more common ricotta cheese version, and is quite good. Sorry, it's not downtown Boston, and it's not Malden either (the original requested locations). But yummy nonetheless. Ken Pogran

Meatball subs in Boston?

They use only 2 or 3 slices of "steak" which are about 1/8 inch thick rather than macerated shavings like most places. They lay the slices on the grill (griddle not char-grill) overlapping them so they are about a 10 inch square. When they are done on one side, they flip them over and lay the cheese on top. Then they fold the steak up so the cheese is in the middle and put it on the sub roll with tomato sauce. You have to know to ask for the sauce (most people who go there do). Just say "large steak and cheese with sauce" and you'll be fine. When you are done eating say "that was wicked good" and they'll think you are from Wakefield. Joseph
