i had been told about this place a couple of times and last night we
were in that neighborhood and so we went. jasmine bistro is in brighton
center on market street just off the corner of washington. its menu is
very international with sections of french, hungarian, near east, mid
east and more. prices ranged about $7-10 for appetizers and salads, and
 $14-30 for entrees.

we listened to the specials and mostly ordered from them. she had the
potato leek soup with watercress and a single seared sea scallop. it was
very rich and balanced and i am not a major fan of that dish but i liked
it. i started with mushroom paprikash which had 5 different types of
mushrooms (button, crimini, oyster and 2 more) in a very rich creamy
sauce redolent with hot paprika and other spices. it was almost curry
like and the spice bite was not too hot but steady. the serving size was
large and could have easily been shared by 4 for tasting. i took a good
 portion home.

her entree was lamb with pomegranate sauce (from the french
section). the lamb tenderloin pieces were cooked to her liking (medium
rare) and very tasty. basmati rice pilaf and some nicely cooked veggied
accompanied it. my entree a special, shrimp and scallop curry (it was
the same as near eastern entree which just had scallops). the sauce was
spiced to my liking (i asked for 5 out of 10 and they got it right). not
like any indian or thai curries that i have seen. the bite was delayed
and very enjoyable. it also came with the same rice and veggies. the
price was more than i expected as the scallops only version was $18 and
this was $24 so it was $6 for 2 very large shrimp. had i known i would
have ordered the scallops only version. i also took home some of this.

the service was very nice and our waiter was pleasant with an
interesting accent. his parents were hungarian and pakistani and he came
here when he was 7 and lived in east boston.

the total was about $70 with one bottle of sparkling water. not cheap
but it was worth the price and i have a very nice lunch waiting in the
fridge. i haven't had hungarian food since we ate at budapest cafe a
few years ago. we will be back sometime when we want an exotic meal and
 not have to go downtown.
