Itaki/Ipswich

Someone put a lot of money into this little place...and the results are quite good. I think the spelling might be Ithaki, but I'm not sure.

Located near the train station in Ipswich, Itaki is a fairly authentic Greek restaurant (not that I've ever been to Greece, but I may go this summer).

The building is done very well with a true Greek revival exterior and contemporary interior. the only thing I didn't like was the lack of booths, and no arms on the chairs. I feel that not putting in booths is a big mistake.

We started with an appetizer of calamari which came charred and turned out to actually be octopus which I guess is a little tougher than squid?

The lamb shish ke bab was two wooden spears of well marinated lamb and cooked perfectly...i.e, med rare. The veggies on the skewer had been marinated and were nicely charred over an open fire.

I didn't get a chance to try the Moussaka but an order went by and looked pretty good.

A baked chicken was OK but nothing you couldn't make at home. I'd avoid this dish, along with the potatoes which were diced and didn't quite work.

The spinach and feta ravioli was excellent.

You could make a meal out of several appetizers and leave very full.

wine list is a bit weak. I was tempted to try a $ 35 Greek wine but I came to my senses and settled for a California merlot.

I like Greek food and this place is a good addition to the north shore dining scene. Stay with the ethnic stuff and you'll have a very good meal.
