 Easy to recommend:
 Biba and sister-spot Pignoli
 Olive's in Charlestown
 Pomodoro in the North End
 Providence in Brookline
L'Espalier (mega-star French) in the Back Bay

 Something a little different:
Uva in Allston, of all places
The Black Crow in Jamaica Plain
Chez Henri, French-Cuban (?!) fusion in Cambridge

Biba is very good. Rialto is supposed to be very good as well, but I
haven't been there yet. The Helmand is a good restaurant--the service
is quite good, the food is interesting--but I wouldn't put it in the
same class as the other two. Of course, it is also more affordable.

Other good places in the same league as Rialto and Biba include
 (in no particular order):

 Salamander (Cambridge)--grilled and Asian-influenced foods are a
   specialty.
Ambrosia on Huntington (Boston, Back Bay)
Hamersley's Bistro (Boston, South End)--French food with some New
   England elements.
Olives (Charlestown)--very popular, very good Mediterranean influenced
food, but beware the long lines (no reservations) and sometimes less-
than-stellar service. Not a place for a quiet meal.

 And for more traditional food:

L'Espalier (in the Back Bay--may be the most expensive in town)
Aujourd'hui (in the Four Seasons Hotel)

I prefer Up Stairs at the Pudding to Rialto, but I heartily second your
suggestion of Helmand, which is truly excellent. I also really like
Cafe Louis in the Louis clothing store on Newbury Street (not to be
confused with Armani in the Armani clothing store on Newbury Street).
