Try Mama Maria's in Boston's North End. Very professional waiters, good
wines, lovely restaurant with North Italian food, dressy despite informal
name, and right outside Paul Revere's house. Call early for a reservation.

Informal -- East COast Grill in Cambridge and Calarmari Cafe or Giacomo's in
 North End.

 In Boston.

Last I saw, St. Cloud's was closed.

Hamersley's is an excellent choice. I have never been to Cornucopia,
but it certainly has a great setting.

I have had several pretty mediocre meals at La Groceria (and
a couple very good ones). The inconsistency in food and service
keep me from seconding this suggestion. For informal Italian,
I would prefer to venture to the North End, and try one of the
smaller restaurants, like Pomodoro or Alloro (moderately expensive),
or Giacamo's or The Daily Catch (moderate)--cramped, not too
much atmosphere, but good food. For inexpensive Italian, I head
 for Il Panino.

For romance, you can also try Icarus (very good food and service,
with a nice atmosphere--one of the most consistently underrated
 restaurants in the Boston area).

A couple of new places which I haven't tried, but which should
fit your requirements are Rialto (mediterranean-inspired, in
Charles Hotel, Cambridge) and Ambrosia on Huntington (both are
 very expensive).

Of course there are also the old standbys like Aujourd'hui (Four
Seasons Hotel, very expensive) and L'Espalier (Back Bay, very
expensive)--to which no one has taken me either!

You might also check out the Boston Restaurant List maintained

There is also an FTP-able version which I can probably find
if you don't have web access.
