I have heard from a number of people who work or have worked at Anthony's that Anthony Athanas himself is one of the real problems of the operation. He is well into his 80's and spends most of his time at the restaurant. I'm told that it seems his one joy in life is making the work enviornment intolerable for everyone there - and apparently it is starting to show through - with a vengance. I have heard horror stories from waitstaff and from dozens of patrons about shouting matches he often gets into with customers (in the dining room , no less). I spoke recently to a waitperson who had been there for years and she told me that although she used to love to go to work - she now is at the point of having to see a therapist so that she can work the last little while before retiring (she thinks that she is too old to go somewhere else before retiring). A real shame, it would have been better for the restaurant to go out on a high note, than to end up this way. The final memories of Pier 4 will not be pleasant ones for staff or customers.
