Tio Pepe is always reliable. Although the name is Spanish you'll also find many continental dishes. If you go, be sure to save room for pine nut cake for dessert.

Depends on what you're looking for. There's "good" as in good food in which case I would suggest Hampton's at the Harbor Court (5 star restaurant - 5 star prices), Boccaccio's in Little Italy (also pricey but wonderful) and Sunday Brunch at the Pavillion at the Walter's Art Gallery.

In Baltimore, though, "good" can also mean a true sample of the indescribable Baltimore ambience (dat means surroundins', hon). If you're looking for true Baltimore flavor, high hair, bizzare accents, and hon-ed by your waitress, you can try the Palmer House Restaurant on Eutaw Street, Maison Marconi's (also excellent food - this one is upscale Baltimore) on Saratoga St., or Martezek's on Mulberry St.. If you want steak, there's the House of Welch on Guilford St. (true, true Baltimore there, hon). Try Haussner's on Eastern Ave. for dessert - the place is truly indescribable and the desserts are great (DON'T go there for dinner - you could choke trying to get down their Spaetzle). If you really want the unadulterated experience, you can try a late night meal at the Sip 'N' Bite over on Boston St. (my favorite quote from a waitress at the S&B: "I ain't outta nothin' but patience tonight.")

Breakfast can only be one of two places - Pete's Grill in Waverly (my favorite - say Hi to Lou and Cher for me) or Jimmy's in Fells Point - this is also the strong version of Baltimore. At either place, be sure to get a side of Scrapple with your breakfast - HEAVEN!

Bertha's in Fells Point does a wonderfully charming Scots Tea on Saturdays, if you're into that sort of thing. You have to call and make reservations a day in advance so the owner's grandmother has time to bake the shortbread - I'm not kidding.

I guess that you can tell which version of "good" I'm partial to.

Have fun - go O's.

We went up to Baltimore a couple of Sundays ago and I am absolutely convinced that

a) it is illegal to serve bad food in Baltimore
b) I would weigh 300 lbs. if I lived there. :)

We didn't even eat at any special restaurant - we simply walked about the Inner Harbor and ate this and that. Then we walked up to Little Italy and went to the bakery on the corner (oh hell, what's the name of it?) that sells real Italian cookies & Gelato - the best place to go for dessert after a meal. Little Italy is wonderful - Fell's Point is great. Bertha's Mussels are the best. I know this is of little help, but just trying to make a point - we live in DC and I'd drive up to Baltimore *anytime* for a meal.

And...GO RED SOX!!!! (playing at the Yahd on April 17th)

The bakery is Vaccaro's. For a GREAT Italian meal, try Amicci's. they have two locations--one in Little Italy and one about 10 minutes away on O'Donnell Street in Camden. Both locations serve the same menu. It is relatively inexpensive $8.95 - $11.95. Much less than most downtown places. They don't take reservations and get quite crowded after 6:00 pm. The Camden location is larger and has a nicer atmosphere. Most of the other restaurants in Little Italy serve the same type of food at ridiculous prices. There are a couple of places that are inventive but outragously overpriced with dinner for two with wine costing $100-150.00

Also in the same area is Fisherman's Wharf on President Street, on the outer edge of Little Italy--walking distance from Camden Yard and the Inner Harbor. Obviously a seafood restaurnat. The portions are enormous and the food is great. For the best steamed crabs in the downtown area try Obryki's. If you want to drive a little, go to Bo Brooks on Bel Air Road. You won't be disappointed.

Arguably the best restaurant in the city is Tio Pepe's. It is Spanish and you must make Saturday night reservations weeks in advance. If you don't mind eating before 6:00 pm or after 9:00 pm you might get in on a day's notice. It is moderately priced with most entrees averaging in the $12.00 to $20.00 range but you MUST try the shrimp in garlic sauce appetizer and have the pinenut cake for dessert. Also have the red or white sangria. It is noisy and the waiters can be a bit offputtting but it is well worth it.

We live in the Baltimore area and make it a point to eat out at least once a week--more if we have the opportunity. E-mail me for other ideas.
