H.L. Mencken's Cultured Pearl Restaurant has great atmosphere and superior mexican food. A cab ride is needed from the convention center.

For crabs, go to Obrycki's. Otherwise, Phillip's restuarant in the HarborPlace complex is probably your best bet.

Fisherman's Wharf is a good seafood restaurant. It is a bit expensive but the plates are pretty big, almost enough for two people and definitely worth the price. Their seafood bisque is really good! You might want to go during lunch and catch some of the lunch specials at a lower cost. The restaurant is located at the Inner Harbor right next to Little Italy. Sorry I don't have the exact address.

Enjoy!

Hi David,
Baltimore has lots of good restaurants, depending on what you want to eat. Some favorites, by nationality, all near the statue on charles St. Japanese - Kawasaki on Charles Street - excellent sushi bar. Spanish - Tio Pepe. Great paella. Same area as Kawasaki; Nouveau American - Donna's, also on Charles street. Crabs - try O'Breakeys at Fells point. Enjoy.

Two very good restaurants in your price range are located on N. Charles near your hotel. Akbar is my favorite Indian restaurant in Baltimore. The food and service have always been always good. It is usually not crowded at dinner, where most of the diners appear to be regulars. The lunch buffet is a terrific bargain. Helmond is an Afghan restaurant; most of the entrees are variations of lamb or chicken with rice. Portions tend to be somewhat small, but prices are too, so you can easily order multiple courses and sample different dishes.

John Steven Ltd. in Fells Point, a short water taxi ride from Inner Harbor, offers an eclectic menu and daily specials. If the weather is suitable, you can eat outside in the garden. The corner entrance leads directly into the bar, which is usually packed; there is a second entrance on the side street which leads to the dining area. There are many other bars and restaurants in that historic waterfront area; it is now also famous as the setting for the police station in "Homicide".

If you're into the crab thing at all, you've got to go to Obrycki's, which has the best spicy steamed blue crabs in the universe. They fill your beer order, spread out butcher paper, then dump 'em down straight on the table, a dozen at a time, ready to dismember with mallet and fork. I wish I had a dozen right now!

Obrycki's is about a five-minute cab ride from Inner Harbor, or you can take the water taxi to Fell's Point and walk a few blocks.

Be sure NOT to go to Phillips - a touristy place with fair service
and fair quality.
