For a good place to eat near Bath, head down the peninsula to the town of Popham. It's not real near, but the restaurant right at the fort (can't miss it) has great seafood and an even better view. Try to get out on the enclosed porch - I've spent several evenings there watching seals bobbing in the waters at the mouth of the Kennebec and have seen Ospreys fishing there as well. I like the Oyster cakes - only place I've ever had them. And, of course, the Lobster...

I can give you the names of some landmarks along this stretch of Rte. 1.
The Taste of Maine is just north of Bath (:-) for Mainers who know
the commercial) and is what you'd expect of a big, old seafood place, except that the prices have remained reasonable. The key is that locals eat there, not just tourists. Usually that's a good way of determining the quality of any Maine restaurant.
While you probably weren't thinking of diners, you still have to
stop at Moody's in Waldoboro. You can't miss it - drive for another 20 minutes or so beyond Bath on Route 1 and you'll see the 50-year-old neon sign. It's hard to explain why, but Moody's is perfect. Atmosphere, service, the works. Plus, of course, you can stuff yourself with great heavy food for about five bucks, including pie and fried-on-the-premises donuts that you could throw through a window. Plus the crowd is about as nice a mix of tourists, truckers, hard core natives and suburban Maine types (like me) as you'll find. Enjoy.
