We were recently in that area and had lunch at the Maine Diner. A pretty authentic diner with a nice staff and a good menu. Lots of lobster o' course... ******************************************************************* Jon Rubinstein Amy Stevenson Check out the French Culinary Institute's Home Page at... http://www.interport.net/fci/ *******************************************************************
Maine
Kennebunkport, ME Area?
We've eaten at Arrow's in Ogunquit (a short distance south of Kennebunkport) and had one of the very best meals ever. This is rated a 26 out of 30 points by Zagat's ("extraordinary") and well worth our 1 hour drive to get there (from Nashua, NH). Warning: this excellent food, decor, and service come at a price - around $45 pp for a meal, avg., not including the wine or tip.
In Kennebunkport itself, you might try the White Barn Inn. We've heard very good things about it, although we've not eaten there. Meals avg a little less than Arrow's.
-jeffLet's get breakfast out of the way first. Two great spots are the Green Heron Inn, on Ocean Drive, about a half mile before Bush's house. They make their own English muffins and feature fresh berries and such in their entrees. Accross the street, on the river over looking a marina, is a place whose name I can't remember. It's behind a motel/bed & breakfast. Great corned be hash, great attitude. Good spot early in the morning to watch the boats come and go. My favorite place - though not truly a restaurant - is the Clam Shack. It's on the Kennebunk side of the bridge that separates Kennebunk from Kennebunkport. Just a white shack with a couple of benchs outside. Really, Really, really good fried clams. A pint will just about do you. If you'd just as soon not dine "in the rough" two recommendations are Mable's Lobster Claw, same area as the above two breakfast spots, and the Maine Dinner, a few miles away, on Route 1, in Wells. Mables (to answer another post in this newsgroup) does indeed make the best lobster roll in all of Maine. If you don't agree, take it up with Mable - if you dare. She's been cooking lobster for some 25 years and knows a thing or two about the subject. For dinner she prepares a super rich Lobster Savanah. The Maine Diner serves great down home, down east cooking. I tried their Speciality - Lobster Pie - chunk full of lobster and worth building a reputation upon. Their seafood chowder has won so many contests that folks have stopped holding chowder contests. If you need anymore suggestions - talk with Beryl, desk clerk at the Shamut Resort. Another genuine article down easterner, she really knows the Kennebunk area. Enjoy, Holly Moore
