plantation tours. Any ideas on the best ones to take?

amy, i've had my share of out of town guests, so I've hit most of the swamp tours.

I'm gonna take a bit of an exception to your other recommendations here.... unless your friends are REALLY die hard history buffs, they will be much happier with Oak Alley than the small "less restored" plantations. It's grand, it's scenic, it's set up for visitors, good foto ops, and you can get them that authentic mint julip to sip on the porch. In a souvenier cup! (Hey, we are talking tourists, here). I wouldn't recommend lunch there, tho some do.

I think I have been on a dozen different swamp tours. I pretty much feel that if it's advertised in a hotel, it ain't so hot. I found, quite by accident, an "out of the way" one, which I was delighted with.

It's called Zam's, and it's in the town of Kraemer...

You will likely be the only visitors that day. It's like....well, the only thing I can think of is, this guy is a cajun version of that Crocodile Hunter on TV. "For a six pack, I'll jump outta da boat and rassle a gator."

Great place to buy gator skulls, etc. I think I have heard this is the guy that sells them to all the shops in the quarter.

I would probably try and call first, for hours/days.

Then I would head another 25 minutes down the road (you are driving thru the HEART of cajun country) to Houma, and "dine" at Boudreau and Thibodeau Cajun Cookin'....a roadside 24 hour cajun seafood place. Imagine Deanie's, if it served GOOD FOOD. I drive down there just for the lemonade, which they squeeze lemons into a mason jar for. No kidding.

Yes, it's a one day jaunt.
