You beat me to it -- Mandina's is a must, non-touristy, neighborhood Creole place. More upscale: Lemon Grass (Vietnamese/Creole fusion cuisine); Bayona; Herbsaint.

Avoid any place owned by Emeril LIKE THE PLAGUE.

Clover Grill in the Quarter. A great slice of Americana. .............and all meals are served with attitude. You will love it.

Try the Pearl. It's west of the French Quarter. A basic joint that has good red beans & rice, oysters, and the like.

I like Mandina's (3800 Canal). Great little neighborhood place. If you're going there for lunch, go a little earlier or later to beat the crowds.
