Take Veterans Blvd. a few miles to Metarie. Have beignets and coffee at the Morning Call. Last year when we were in NOLA for JazzFest we stayed in Kenner and had breakfast every day at the Morning Call.

Not a bad idea at all. Hmmm...breakfast. There's not much in Kenner, unless you want Denny's or Shoney's, etc. Take the Airport access road to Veterans Blvd., then turn right onto Veterans. You'll be pointing east, towards town. There's a little place just past Williams (the first big light past the exit onto Veterans) called Chez Pierre. It's a bakery that does the gourmet coffee thing. They have good pasteries, etc., and it would be a very short trip out of the airport. If that's not what you had in mind, keep heading down Veterans to Severn in Metairie. Turn left (towards the lake) on Severn and go down to West Esplanade. There's a restaurant on the right called the Peppermill that has a full breakfast menu. Peppermill is pretty good, and would be something more substantial than just the coffee-and-danish route. You'll have to fight a bit of traffic to go further into Metairie, but nothing like I-10 at rush hour.

Now, if you want to introduce your friends to something truly New Orleans without having to go into town, go to Morning Call, at 17th and Severn. Morning Call used to be the "other" coffee stand in the French Market, further down in the Market than Cafe' du Monde (which is still there, of course). The folks who own MC moved the place out to Metairie in the mid-70s. It still looks very much like it did in the French Market once you walk in. The menu is limited to coffee, milk, and beignets, of course, but I actually like Morning Call's donuts better than CDM, atmosphere differences notwithstanding. I've got a review of both places out on VNO in the dining section: http://www.yatcom.com/neworl
