There are three approaches to lunch in New Orleans: get a sandwich, a plate lunch at one of the places downtown, or have a full meal at one of the better restaurants.

On the sandwich front: Since you have a car, I'd bypass Mother's in favor of Liuzza's on Bienville and N. Telemachus in Mid-City, or head out to Bucktown and get seafood at Lama's St. Roch or R&O's, both on Hammond Hwy. If you want to stay in the Quarter, try Cafe Maspero on Decatur (scroll up in this newsgroup for my review of Maspero's, or try http://www.yatcom.com/neworl/dining/masperoreview.html), or head down to Port of Call over on Esplanade. If you're going to do the St. Charles streetcar, try Streetcar Sandwiches on S. Carrollton Ave. near the car barn for the best roast beef po-boy in town. There's also Parasol's on Constance and Third. The best oysters in town (on a plate or a sandwich) are at Uglesich's (http://www.yatcom.com/neworl/dining/uglesich.html).

For a plate lunch, Armand's on Carondelet, the Commerce on Common and Camp, Mother's (great red beans or jambalaya), and Mr. Ed's on St. Charles are all winners. All of these are in the Central Business District (CBD). If you don't mind venturing away from downtown, try Mandina's on Canal St. in Mid-City, or back out to Bucktown to Carmine's or West End for Bruning's for seafood.

Then there's what I call "dinner for lunch." Antoine's, Arnaud's, Mr. B's, and the Rib Room (all in the Quarter) have great lunch special deals ($9.95 to $15.95). Great value if you want to go that high. Anacapri and Bacco (both again in the Quarter) do great Italian, and have reasonable lunch specials. Emeril is usually high for lunch, as is Commander's.

Enjoy your trip!

Cheers,
Ed.

I highly suggest Masperos for sandwiches, steak, or seafood. There is also so Johnnies for good sandwiches and traditional New Orleans cuisine. Johnnies is located on St. Louis st. in the French Quarter. For a really nice atmosphere and excellent cuisine try Nolas also on St. Louis st. Hope this helps.
