Yes, Commander's is still pretty darned good. It's ranked consistently in the top 3 of just about anyone who eats out regularly in town. My personal favorite restaurant is Antoine's (on St. Louis St. in the Quarter), but that shouldn't take anything away from a place like Commander's. Whether you go for lunch, dinner, or the Jazz Brunch on Sunday, it's a winner. The main reason Commander's stays at the top is that Ella Brennan gives her executive chefs a lot of leeway, but still demands a certain level of consistency. That's why the careers of chefs like Paul Prudhomme and Emeril Lagasse got really moving at Commander's Palace. Someone mention Kevin Graham's place on Magazine St. Graham's is the current "hot new restaurant," much as Emeril's and Bayona (Susan Spicer's place) were a couple of years ago. Those places are now firmly part of the New Orleans dining landscape, and Graham's is the novelty. So far, so good, and it's worth checking out if you're in town. Cheers, Ed.

On my mailing list, we've received a couple of not-so-positive reports, one of which a situation where the folks dining there had their meal comped by the restaurant because the service was so bad. That's so inconsistent with Bacco that I'm glad to see a recent good experience. I've got to get back over there and check it out personally. Sigh. So many restaurants, so little time... Cheers, Ed.
