I'm going to Washington next week, will only be there for two nights, but I have reservations at Kinkeads for both nights (and no, it's not owned by a relative). I first tried it because I saw it mentioned over and over and over again on the dc.dining newsgroup. Check it out - also a rave review for it on epicurious at: http://www.epicurious.com/epicurious/guide/dc/kinkeads.html P.S. Don't miss the Pepita crusted salmon.

Keep a list, and come back again... That said, a few ideas: Cashion's Eat Place on Columbia Rd NW - go early, the line is LONG after 6 or 7 pm, but the food is REALLY great. it's a sort of a new American place, but better than most. Meskerem - 18th St NW - the best Ethiopian in town. Bacchus on Jefferson St (off Conn Ave) or Skewers (at 17th & P Sts NW) or Lebanese Taverna (on Conn Ave at Woodley Park) for Middle Eastern Bua at 17th & P for Thai. For a good light lunch, Cafe Luna (also 17th &P), or Cafe Petito (Conn Ave, just above Dupont Circle) B Smith's at Union Station or Gerogira Brown's (Mc Pherson Square) for updated southern food. Tom-Tom on 18th St NW, or Jaleo at 7th & E NW for Tapas. Cafe Lutrec on 18th St NW for French. Kinkeads at 2100 Pennsylvania Ave NW for upscale dining There are SO many others I can think of, but I don't know what neighborhood or what types of food you want. Eating in Washington gets more fun every year, as more and more really good places show up. One more suggestion : If you want to just walk through Adams-Morgan (Neighborhood centered around 18th St & Columbia Rds NW) most of the restaurants are good. Just choose one. Georgetown is a little less consistent, but you could find a good place to eat wandering through there too...You could also walk along Pennsylvania Ave between 1st &8th Sts SW (be careful) (Capitol Hill), or Massachusetts Ave from Union Station heading east. All good neighborhoods to eat in, with the highest restaurant density in Adams-Morgan, and Georgetown.
Kinkeads is one of the best but dont miss either Vidalia's (American with a southern twist (see the vidalia onion appetizer) and has a wonderful wine list) or Provence (Jannik Camm, French Provencal) and trhen there is Citronelle in the Latham Hotel and then Gerard's Place on McPherson Square.... and well you get the picture. The above are among hte cream of the cream in a great restaurant town. The solution is stay longer. I'm going to Washington next week, <snipped> I second this recommendation - we have a son working in DC and whenever we go, often for just a night, we always eat there. It has never disappointed in any way - in fact, we like it better than almost anywhere we know along the East Coast. It is a MUST, IOHO!! scg
