The World's Best Restaurant

Starting five years ago I set a goal of eating at the world's best restaurant. I hung out in librairies and bookshops, got on the nternet, and did a lot of research. Then from there until now I went out and ate at the candidates I had picked.

And the conclusion? Of course, the best restaurant in the world does not exist (I think james Beard said it's where they know your name) but there is some damn fine ones out there!

Here are the restaurants I ate at:

London - Chez Nico, La Tante Claire, Marco Pierre White, Aubergine,Simpsons

France - Troisgros, Alain Ducasse, L'Astor, La Mere Brazier

Switzerland - Girardet

Bangkok - La Normandie, Royal Dragon

Hong Kong - Lai Hing Keen, Yung Kee

Sydney - Forty One, Tetsuya, Rockpool, Darley Street Thai

Melbourne - Paul Bocuse, Jacques Reymond, Stephanies, Flower Drum

Italy - Da Guido, Checchino dal 1887

New Orleans - Emerils

San Francisco - Zuni cafe

Vancouver - Lumiere, Bacchus, Star Anise, Diva at the Met

The search continues....

Oh, there are much better restaurants here in San Francisco than Zuni! We have more restaurants percapita here than Paris! Zuni is all attitude. Sure, there food is good, but it's not great. You should try a few other places here, where the waiters won't snub you if they don't think you're enough.

Mind you, if a waiter does that to me, it will reflect noy only in my tip, but in what I say to others. You should try:

These are pricey:
Le Jadiene
Hayes Street Grill
Crustacean (sp?)
Aqua
Farallon

Just to name a few. I hate to think of Zuni when they think of dining in SF!

The Boulevard (Inn?) near the Embarcadero is great albeit spendy.
