Virtual Exclusivity - Culinary News From Pipeline New York NEW YORK, N.Y. -- There's a virtual smorgasbord of information on the Internet, and Pipeline NY, a PSINet Inc. (Nasdaq: PSIX) company, has launched "nyfood.com", the tri-state area's first World Wide Web site for ordering food for delivery. The New York City-based Internet online service is offering the web service free to all users, and can be reached by directing web browsers to http://www.nyfood.com. The site is an example of the local content Pipeline plans to roll out to cities across the country as part of its Virtual Neighborhoods program. Virtual Neighborhoods was launched by Pipeline's parent, PSINet, to provide local content in select U.S. cities, including Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles and Dallas. Internet users in the NY area can now sample a menu of Manhattan restaurants and food shops by neighborhood, choose items from menus displayed on their computer screen, and then order automatically by pressing a button which will send their selection over telephone lines to the restaurant's fax machine. If the restaurant does not accept fax orders, their phone number will be displayed. The price of the order is automatically tallied on the Web site. "We've combined high-tech and home delivery," said Pipeline Product Manager Edward G. Nadeau. "People can now have food delivered with the click of a few computer keys." No credit cards are needed to use the site, as all orders will be COD. Pipeline NY subscribers will also have the added benefit of joining online raffles for gift certificates to well-known restaurants. This new service is a boon to restaurants and food shops looking to expand their markets and reduce promotional costs. Restaurants will be listed on the site for free for the first three months. After that, they will be charged $19.95 per month for a listing. Each restaurant will be provided with their own Internet address, free Pipeline NY software, and unlimited free access to Pipeline NY services. The restaurant provides NY Food with their menu, business card and a phone or fax number, and NY Food does the rest. "With the advent of New York Food, we are providing a valuable and easy-to-use service to all New Yorkers," said Nadeau. "We believe that it will provide an exciting opportunity for restaurants to test the electronic waters in a virtually risk- free way." Pipeline plans to make the NY Food site a clearinghouse of other food-related Internet sites and information, including restaurant reviews, recipes, and restaurant locators. Headquartered in Herndon, Va., with an established, content-rich "Virtual Neighborhood" in New York City, Pipeline is the nation's first Internet online service that offers unlimited Internet access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at a flat rate ($19.95 per month). Pipeline software is available free by calling 1-800-453-PIPE (7473). Pipeline recently received PC Magazine's "Editors' Choice" award as an excellent package for new users. The Winter 1996 edition of Your First PC describes Pipeline as "the best nationwide Internet service provider."
