I've much appreciated the Sterns books, but find them a little thin. Though I appreciate back-road exploring as much as the next motorist, I usually have to travel by Interstate. What would be helpful would be a guide to independent (mom & pop) restaurants available within 5-10 miles of an Interstate exit. The chain operations that cluster at exits are the worst of examples of mass feed commercial merchandising in America. A reliable listing of alternative choices within easy reach of each exit would be a godsend. Listings would ideally include not only the usual descriptions, cuisine info and anecdotal material from this group, but also mileage from the exit.
