My wife and I used to like Leo's, near Santa Croce. The sphagetti Caruso was excellent. There was also a very small restaurant right next to the central vegatable market, called Mario's, I think, that catered to locals. You would never see any tourists there unless they were with locals.

As a general guide the following is, in a word, tasteful. She lives in Florence. Bring money.

I saw no tourists in there. Try the minestrone ( a local specialty you know). Most of the trattorias are very good. You don't need to go to fancy tourist trap type restaurants. By the way, Alfredo's is in Florence (where fettucine alfredo was created.) Also, if you haven't left yet, be sure to go to the Uffizi and to the Sistene Chapel. All the remodeling work is complete now.
I had one of the best meals of my life twnty minutes outside of Florence at a restaurant called Da Delphina. It's on a hillside overlooking the De Medici Hunting Palace, where the nobles once hunted under the intense moonlight that bathes the valley. Everything -- food, wine, views -- was wonderful and no tourists! Like dining in Italy used to be. Haven't returned in over a year, but I doubt this place has changed. Also, I'll ask some of the Florentines I work with for other suggestions. When do you leave? E-mail [email removed]. (Spieke) PS I'm planning on going to Tuscany in Spring 95 so would be interested in your experiences.
