Guess what - Des Moines, Iowa, has GREAT food!
I went to Des Moines last weekend, and I found some marvelous restaurants. I want to advertise them, because (1) people might not expect them to be there, and thus miss some great food, and (2) two of them seemed empty, undeservedly so; I want them to be flourishing the next time I visit.
A Taste of Thailand 215 E Walnut St, Des Moines
A popular, casual restaurant in a bright in yellow building;
the owner is very friendly. The food seems authentic and can be
quite spicy. It's very good with beer, and coincidentally, this
place is home to the Beers-of-the-World club.
Recommended dishes: Pod Thai (stir-fried noodles with meat)
Sweet Rice with Mango Dessert (yum!)
7 Stars Greek Restaurant Douglas & 69th (more or less)
Casual restaurant (run by people from Morocco) specializing
in Middle-eastern food: Greek, Lebanese, Egyptian, Moroccan,
Persian. Everything was fabulous!
Recommended dishes: Lentil Soup
Anything with lamb
Chelo Kebabi - ground beef kebobs
Moroccan Lamb with Raisins (daily special)
New Delhi Palace 86th & Douglas, Urbandale (in Parkwood Plaza)
Fabulous Indian food in medium-fancy restaurant (cloth napkins
and tablecloths). Extensive and varied menu. The total bill was
a bit expensive ($16 for dinner) but well worth the price. Most
of the food isn't spicy, just rich and well seasoned; however,
some spicy dishes (such as Chicken Vindaloo) are on the menu.
Recommended dishes: Papadum appetizer (crisp crackers with yummy sauce)
Chicken Shahi Korma (in mild, rich sauce of ground
cashews, tomatoes, and cream. YUM!)
Other restaurants look good, but I ran out of time. Next time, I'm going to check out "Alice's Spaghetti Land" and the Iowa Machine Shed Restaurant".
Enjoy!
