Dave--

Both D'Aria's (sp?) and Ambrosia come highly recommended for Italian. For Mexican, it depends on whether your folks prefer "American" or the gen-you-wine. Of the former, Don Pablo's is excellent--actually has a pork dish or two on the menu, unusual for Mexican restaurants in the midwest. Of the latter, Los Tapatios in Greenwood is firstrate. The owner also operates La Charreada here in Bloomington.

For giftgiving purposes, though, you probably would be better off with the Italian places...a tad classier.

Dave--

Last June when in Indy for a wedding, I was treated to dinner at an Afghani restaurant. I truly do not remember the name, or I would tell you. I believe it was on the north side of Indy. And I could certainly get my friends to tell me its name if you want.

The food there was completely different than I expected. And it was all excellent. I don't believe it was expensive, either (like I said, I was treated to this dinner).

If you are interested, and can't look in the Yellow Pages under Afghani food, send me e-mail, and I'll work on it.

Good luck,

Almost certainly it was Kabul at 86th and Ditch Road on the No Side of Indy between Michigan and Meridian (I-465 exits). Just behind Kabul is a very good Italian restaurant, Amafli. Amafli is very good, expensive, and small. Be sure to call for reservations.
