I like the "Machine Shed." It's in the southeast part on Business US 20 at or near the I-90 entrance; "Farmer's Market" motif; prices well under $20. The "Bicycle Club" is nearby and has a good reputation--but I have not been there.

When I taught at Beloit College a few years ago the faculty used to like the following Rockford restaurants (I can't gaurantee that they are still there, but I assume they are):

1) The Vietnamese restaurant next door to the elephant/octopus car wash just south of downtown. I wish I could remember the name of this place--I am sure if you ask, people will know it as it is the only Vietnamese restaurant in town. It is in a tiny old corner mall on the main n/s road to DeKalb on the E side of the river--not a great section of town, but the food is great and cheap. De Kalvb faculty would drive to Rockford for that restaurant, as well.

2) Mary's Market/REstaurant--good medit. sandwiches, baked goods, pastas. Inexpensive.

Have fun ...

I second the Machine Shed --- love the ribs and "down home" atmosphere. My daughter and fiance love it--- we took them there several times when they were students at nearby beloit College. Mary's is also terrific... great wood oven pizzas. Also one of their favorites.
