Since moving from Minneapolis many years ago, we have been looking for good Vietnamese food that was not really expensive and inconvenient (like the very delicious "Le Colonial" at 937 North Rush Street), and not in an "iffy" neighborhood (like Clark and Argyle, where people ran into the restaurant where we were eating and ducked down as a couple of dozen Chicago police officers ran up and down the street with weapons ready). Anyway, I found this really tasty food at the "Nam Viet Restaurant" at 6731 North Northwest Highway, Chicago 60631. Phone is 773-763-0307 or 773-763-0029. My wife and I ate lunch there. We started with Vietnamese egg rolls and Vietnamese Pork & Shrimp Pancake. The former were very tasty (though running a second place to those about a mile from our house in Mpls). The latter was quite good. We had had this dish as a main course at other Vietnamese restaurants. It is a thin rice flour "pancake", though almost as thin as a french crepe. It is cooked with medium sized shrimp and bits of pork. Then, just before finished cooking, been sprouts are placed on it and it is folded over like an omelette. It is eaten by slicing off a piece and wrapping it in a lettuce leaf with a bit of cilantro. (Sometimes, mint is also served.) This is then dipped in the thin sauce and eaten. As our main courses, we had a hot spicy Lemon Grass Chicken with Onions, served over white rice. We also had a bowl that contained a small amount of lettuce, cucumber, and bean sprouts at the bottom, then steemed rice noodles. Topping it off was slices of grilled chicken and chunks of Vietnamese egg roll. You pour some of the thin sauce over it, and enjoy! A very friendly person waited on us. She said that they had been there about 10 years, so I guess they are not in danger of going out of business next week.
