Although Ruth's Chris is "good", why bother when you can go to Chicago Chop House? It is excellent & you don't have to pay a al carte prices for your generous salad & large baked potato? You can get an EXCELLENT prime aged beef dinner there beginning at $20 -- and about $5 less for slightly smaller portion before about 5pm. BTW, fairly nice wine list, very attentive service, atmosphere is clubby & usually busy.

I have since moved to Atlanta & sorely miss the Chop House. . . :-(

I've eaten at Ruth's Chris; we were in New Jersey during the Chicago "flood" and were happy to find something approaching fine dining (hey, it's New Jersey!). It's a good restaurant - but if you are in Chicago you can do much better, particularly if your passion is beef. Morton's is better but I would have to say the ne plus ultra is the Chicago Chop House. The only place I have ever had beef that is in the same league is Del Frisco's Double Eagle in Dallas; if you are in Dallas by all means go there but if you are in Chicago go to the Chop House. Beside the steaks they have a special "Chop House-style" prime rib where it is roasted as per normal then sliced off and grilled/seared like a steak - it is phenomenal. Broad wine list (the Duckhorn meritage is a great pairing with any red meat dish) and great service. Added bonus is they also cater to non-meat eaters with a pretty good lineup of seafood; many "MEAT!" places tend to consider the non-meat dishes as a compulsory after-thought - it did not appear that way here.

Just my $0.02 worth - don't spend it all in one place. W G. wrote in message ...

The Saloon steaks has very good steaks, lamb, veal, etc. Also good side dishes and even fish. Nice wines. Also have you considered Gene and Georgetti, excellent. In most of these restaurants ask about walking in without a reservation early or you if wait will a table become free. A certain percentage of tables are not booked and/or there are always no-shows. Good bar atmosphere; mediocre food. Almost any other steak restaurant is better--Eli's, Chop House, Gibson's, Gene's and Georgettii's, Ruth's Chris, Mortons, etc.,--you get the idea.
